Megadeth would like to send congratulations to our tour mates, Slayer, on the debut of their new Top 20 release "World Painted Blood". The album sold 41,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 12 on The Billboard 200 chart.

Плакаты, выпущенные для туристической рекламной кампании Риги, вышли с опечаткой, меняющей слоган на противоположный по смыслу. Об этом пишет Austrian Times. На постерах вместо "Easy to go, hard to leave" (здесь: "Легко приехать, трудно покинуть" - англ.) написано "Easy to go, hard to live" ("Легко приехать, трудно жить").

Notes augmented

We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!

Product tweaks and bug kill

  1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
  2. If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
  3. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
  4. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
  5. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
  6. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

New FCK fixes rich text editor!

  1. We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
  2. When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
  3. RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
  4. An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
  5. The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers

LiveJournal Cares

We’re pleased to introduce you to [info]lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit [info]lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

Papered in postcards

A couple of weeks ago, we asked you to send in postcards to surround us with LiveJournal community. Thanks for coming through! We've received postcards all the way from Germany, Finland, and Canada and from all over the US, including Texas, Florida, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Indiana, Hawaii, and Oklahoma just to name just a handful. We're thrilled with our improved decor.

Please keep the love coming for one more week by writing to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. Be sure to include your username, since we'll be drawing the names of ten random contributors next Thursday to win paid account credits!

Photos of the week

We have more dazzling images posted by talented LiveJournal photographers from around the world. We're hoping to span the entire globe, so please continue posting and tagging. Of course, you can also sit back and enjoy the view at [info]lj_photophile.

You can see a sample of this week's gorgeous photos and check out spotlight communities and awesome user content after the jump!

A couple of nights ago I watched the second episode of V, yet another remake of the '80s that the American entertainment industry seems to be specializing in.  And, I'm afraid that while the first episode was nice gripping television, this new episode I found to be one of the most boring hours I've ever watched.

The problem is that I've seen it all before.  Now, I don't remember much about the miniseries from the 80s, and even less of the TV show that followed it, but I do remember enough - and this is one of the problems with doing a direct remake.  All the suspense of figuring out what the visitors want is for nothing, because anybody familiar with the first version already knows.  We know they're evil, and we know they're going to create a fascist state, and we know why.  To make matters worse, one of the principle actors, Joel Gretsch, is left essentially playing the same character he played in The 4400, but this time with a priest's collar.

EDIT@08:16 UTC/GMT. Wow. That was ugly. I expected it to go for 30 minutes and have maybe 1 minute of broken connectivity. Instead it lasted over 4 hours and we had 10 minutes of downtime directly related to the load balancer upgrades and then another 5-10 minutes of downtime when our primary Pingback database server crashed and the secondary couldn't take over; which could have been indirectly caused by the network upgrade missing a self-VIP.

Anyways, we're up, we're working, the load balancers are barely breaking a sweat right now and I need some food and a shot of whiskey. I don't even *like* whiskey!!

Thanks [info]mhwest and [info]dnewhall for helping out!

---

On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.

Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.

We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!

As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work.

When I got my poppy from the veteran standing outside the grocery store, it occurred to me that he couldn't possibly be a WWII vet. He was the age I always remember poppy sellers being -- but I'm a lot older now so I'm guessing Korea. My father fought in Korea.

According to Wikipedia, of the 65,038,810 people who were members of the armed forces of one of the combat nations, there are three verified World War I veterans still living -- two are 108, one is 109 -- as well as a 106 year old from England they haven't been able to verify. Four all together.

World War II veterans are all over eighty and, while there are still millions left, I don't doubt there's fewer every day.

Korea. Viet Nam. Bosnia. Afghanistan. The problem is, there will always be new veterans. New men and women to stand outside grocery stores in Legion jackets and caps in early November.

New men and women to remember.

Since 2002, 133 Canadian soldiers have been killed serving in Afghanistan. The CBC maintains a list, here. And the overpasses are still filled from Trenton to Toronto, every time one of them comes home.

FAVOURITE GAMES: Disgaea 1 and 2, Shin Megami Tensei, Pokemon, the Jak series, any thing Mario-related, Dark Cloud 2, Katamari, Dance Dance Revolution, Soul Nomad, Phoenix Wright, Grim Fandango, Golden Sun, the Sims 2 and 3, Phantom Brave, Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, Patapon, Audiosurf, Team Fortress 2, Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, X, SSX, Ninja Town, Little Big Planet, Legend of Zelda, .hack, .hack//GU, Tetris, Super Smash Brothers, Trauma Center, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, The World Ends With You, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, Metal Gear Solid, the Ratchet and Clank series, Digimon World: Dusk, NiGHTS into Dreams, Kirby, Devil May Cry 1 and 3, Makai Kingdom. Oh, and here's some obscure ones nobody has ever heard of, but I love to bits: Dual Hearts and Survival Kids.
I'm basically all about RPGs. I also love strategy games, platformers, and puzzle games. I don't really care for sports games or shooters, but there are a couple I like, I'm just picky about them.

INTRODUCE YOURSELF:
Yo, I'm Mur! I'm a second year Game Art student, and I have a serious PS2 addiction. I also love my portable systems (I have a DS Lite and one of the fat first-gen PSPs). My life as a gamer started with Sonic 2, and later Pokemon, both of which I still love today. My current addiction is Persona 4, which I am thoroughly enjoying, and I seriously love Pizza. My non-gaming interests include Doctor Who, comics, some anime and manga (I am very picky about it), Harry Potter, Steampunk, and Dragons (I have yet to find a dragon-related game I've truly enjoyed though D: ). I also enjoy pizza, kittens, macros, and roleplaying.

My LJ is filled with lots of fanart, because I'm almost always drawing, and my occasional moaning about my annoying roommates. (It's mostly art, I promise.) The majority of my journal is public, I friendslock roughly 1/3rd of my posts. F-locked posts are usually for content (such as nude sketches or vicious rants). I'm afraid I'm not caught up on the newest games because I am a poor college student, but I'd love to geek out with anyone willing to listen.

After my last post, [info]telynor posted a link to the lj post on the Facebook wall. Yay! Proactive interaction! This seems to be the best way for me to talk directly to these fen without actually getting a Facebook account. Which I'd rather not do.

So, if those of you with Facebook accounts and the time would post links to this, I'd really appreciate it.

TIA

-----

Dear Spanish Fans:

First, I appreciate fansites. Thank you for your interest. But, could you please set it up so that it's clearly a fansite. As it is now, people think it's actually me and that makes me look bad when they expect interaction and I don't respond.

Second, if you are linking to free online downloads of my books, please stop. This isn't like lending your copy of a book to a friend, it's a copyright violation.

Thank you.
Tanya Huff

A Mis Fans Hispánicos Queridos:

Primero, me gustan fansites.

Gracias.

So just for the hell of it -- and because I was having trouble figuring out just what exactly Vicki was thinking when she... um, never mind, that would be telling -- I just googled myself.

Quel surprise: I'm on Facebook. In Spanish. Right here.

If this is a fansite, yay. I'm all for fansites.

The google quote however is: "Welcome to the official Facebook Page of Tanya Huff. Get exclusive content and interact with Tanya Huff right from Facebook."

NOT my official facebook page. Don't have one. Not getting one.
NOT a way to get exclusive content and interaction.

Just thought y'all ought to know. Spread the word.

Also, I hate the photo.

ETA from [info]maribou: OTOH, they are also saying (as far as I can make out, and someone else's Spanish might be better), that if anyone wants to read one of your books online, they should post the title they are interested in on the "wall" page and then the person will post a link to that book. Which, unless you are offering your books free online and I just don't know about it, might be a very good reason to not like the person behind this.

Can anyone confirm this? Because this is something I'll have to stop.

As of yet, I haven't gotten my H1N1 flu shot.  This bothers me.

More specifically, what bothers me is why I haven't gotten my shot yet.  Now, I know the news has reported that there has been a massive shortfall of vaccinations, which during a pandemic is shocking in and of itself, but that's not what I'm going to take issue with.  And, with a shortfall where instead of a million flu shots being delivered to Ontario there were instead around 150,000, the critical cases taking priority makes perfect sense.  Again, that's not what I'm taking issue with.

I live in Kingston Ontario, a city with a population of around 120,000.  It's a relatively large city for its population - it can easily take 45 minutes to drive across it on city streets (the city alone is 450 square kilometres, not counting the outlying regions).  So, how many H1N1 clinics are set up for early delivery to priority patients?

One.

Guitarist Janick Gers of British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN revealed to BBC News that the band has already started writing songs for its 15th studio album. "We're going to Paris for three weeks to work on some new stuff," Gers said at the Classic Rock Roll Of Honour Awards 2009 on November 2 at the Park Lane Hotel in London, England. "The most important thing for a band is to create new music, otherwise you're not valid — you become a parody."

I'm a 20 year old history student from the UK. Outside of gaming, my interests lie in music, football, and anime/manga, plus D&D and the like. The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

Wii have killer CSI Deadly Intent contests!

[info]c_s_i

If you're a gamer who loves CSI, have Wii got news for you! [info]c_s_i is sponsoring killer contests. Simply post a question to a member of the CSI crew. The winner will get a free copy of CSI: Deadly Intent for Nintendo Wii (with a retail value of $39.99) and get their question answered by a member of the CSI writing team! There's also a fantastic monthly contest. To enter, join [info]c_s_i, play the online version of CSI: Deadly Intent, and respond to a two-part query for a chance to win a Wii! Entries will be judged on composition and originality. Sorry, but you must be a U.S. resident and over 18 years old to participate. Check out the rules here.

Enveloped in postcards

Last week, we asked you to send in postcards to help us decorate our drab concrete walls. Here's a photo of the results so far! Thank you so much and please keep them coming! You can mail them to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. Subject: Cory Doctorow's experiment - Part III

I've already written twice on this subject, but it's time to add some additional commentary.  Part of this comes from wondering just what Doctorow is trying to prove - after all, I said in my very first post, if he's trying to provide a proof-of-concept that free online marketing works, he's a few years too late.  Publishers picked up on that ages ago.  If there is an original development in his experiment, it's providing free audio books, which should help as well - after all, the audio book segment of the market is quite small, and can act as a gateway to the printed book market for new customers just as well as an e-book can.

But, for all of the ways that Doctorow is getting his online marketing right, he seems to be doing everything he can to shoot himself in the foot on other levels.  And now I've learned a new one.

Let me explain - having written two pieces already, I couldn't, in good conscience, let him go forward without at least trying to warn him about the pitfalls he might be facing.  So, I left a comment or two on his blog.  This started a small discussion, which ended with a recommendation from me that he cut out the middleman, deal directly with the printer, and limit his revisions to one every two or three months...and a comment from him stating "Good thing I'm not doing wholesale deals, then. As the article states, fulfilment is via Lulu."

Uh oh.
